The Rosie Bee

Starring Grizzy and Sophie

Happy Halloween!

I wasn’t able to get a picture of them both by a pumpkin (at the same time) this year, but here is one of my favorite pics of them. 🙂

Happy Halloween!

Ahh, Sophie

Living the life. I love how princess-like she is with her poufy fur, all stretched out on the desk.

I’ve long admired quilts. I think they are homey and peaceful and look really cool. Some have made me do a double-take, like
“The Sun Sets on Sunbonnet Sue”
. (Warning, some of the images/themes are a bit unsettling.)

I’ve sewn small items: pillowcases, some skirts, I did a shift dress a while back. I’m starting to do more, but one thing I’ve always wanted to do is quilt. So today I took a class! And this is what I came up with:

I know some of the triangles are waaay off (there is a learning curve with using the rotary cutter, ba-dum-bum), but I was happy I got the seams nice and neat. And check out the fun cat print!

Overall, I found the measuring, sewing, cutting and general precision very therapeutic. My mind tends to bounce all over the place sometimes, and things like this help me focus and relax. And it was fun! I will keep this as my practice square, but I’m on the lookout for a pattern for my very first quilt.

Slim G

Grizzy continues to do well after his scary weight loss earlier this year. He’s still slim, but he’s maintained a steady weight, which to me is the most important thing. (The vet said his weight is fine.) Last night he had a very, very brief coughing fit–maybe two hacks tops–so while I braced myself initially, I found myself relaxing pretty quickly.

One thing I did do was change his litter. Trust me, I am kicking myself for not doing this earlier because within a week of changing the litter he had a ton more energy. His activity levels are now through the roof! He still has his rest periods, but his active periods are much longer and livelier than they’d been in months. Also, I’ve noticed his fur has become considerably softer.

Again, why I didn’t change the litter right away, I don’t know. I have this idea that I asked one of the vets if that could be the problem but they said not, but of course I could be remembering wrong.

At any rate, I tried two different litters and both seemed to work well. Both cats use them without issue. There is no dust, which is awesome for me. It wasn’t until I switched litters that I realized how dusty they could be!

Currently G is running around chasing Sophie. I think he might overwhelm her sometimes, because when he’s active he’s really active! She seems to retreat a bit more, but she still enjoys playtime, too. I ordered some cat shelves for them, and I know Sophie especially likes to be up high, so maybe that will help, too. 🙂

Bring us the interwebs

I wasn’t able to post earlier this week, what with these two hogging the computer and all.

Bring us the interwebs.

This picture makes me laugh because it’s like they’re willing the laptop to open up with their minds. Just like they will their human to play with them, or give them treats, or give them a good scritch behind the ears. 🙂

Pumpkin posin’

Or, Sophie with the Jack-o-Lantern. 🙂

Per request, here is Miss Sophie with the awesome jack-o-latern I got at a local thrift store! I so love thrifting. I like the thrill of the hunt, but I also like the idea of re-using or repurposing things. It goes to show that even when someone no longer has use for something, there is still a lot of love in it.

I want to add, last week was one of those terrible, horrible, no good weeks. But I’m sitting here on Sunday night typing this and I feel really good. This weekend offered me a wonderful respite and a time to reset. I am very thankful.

Have a wonderful week!

A tisket, a tasket…

A Grizzy in a basket!

All tucked in.

All tucked in.

I love my G. I can have the worst day, but coming home to his snuggles always brightens my mood. Both and he and Sophie adore this basket. If you look inside, you’ll see a corner of the basket is all torn up from where they scratched it. 🙂

A change in perspective

Sophie girl.

My sweet girl.

My little G.

Monday was one of those days. I was reeling from some bad stuff that happened during the weekend: I needed some car repairs, and in looking at that, a friend pointed out that my tires were completely bald! Goodbye, money!

Now, I have the means to get it fixed, which is good. But the logistics of getting rentals, or rather, getting a ride to the rental place stirs up some uncomfortable feelings for me. (I feel like I’ve been the “independent kid” in my family, and perhaps that’s why when I need help, it often seems like it’s not there. Maybe because they think, “Oh, she’ll figure something out.)

Then I realized my TMJ had been hurting all day and was getting worse. It hurt to open my jaw even an inch. This is very scary for me, as I locked my jaw for three-plus weeks four years ago. It was extremely painful, cost me a lot of money, and more than anything else, was terrifying as the weeks went on with no change. I was told I might have to consider surgery. Thankfully, my orthodontist helped me out with a couple tweaks to my retainers. (I still say a prayer of thanks for him every once in a while!!)

There were a few other things that happened, which I forget. But that is good in a way. You see, as I drove home I decided I needed to try and relax to help my jaw. I think the light traffic helped, because I noticed I was calmer. I thought, “I’ve got to try and see the positive.” And suddenly, I did.

  • I had to run some errands after work, so I started with the pet store. I got some litter and food and what do you know! The Litter Genie that I had planned on saving up for was on sale for half price!
  • Then I went to the hardware store. There was a lone cart outside, so I pushed it in. The clerk who greeted me looked SO happy and surprised that someone pushed the cart in! Her smile made my day.
  • I was at the store to get some screws (ha) and the guy who helped me was SO nice. He found the ones I needed in about 0.2 seconds. (And trust me, there were dozens. It was a sea of screws.)
  • When I got home, lugging my litter, Litter Genie, and assorted other bags from the car, my neighbor saw me from inside and opened the door for me.

These were all “big-little” things: small gestures that are often overlooked but make such a huge difference in how you feel, when you stop to pay attention.

And let me tell you, there is nothing better than coming home after a yucky day and seeing my two furbabies running around. Well, Grizzy does the flop-and-stretch so I can give him a good rub-down, and Sophie headbutts me and runs around in circles.

At the end of the day, I see I am very blessed, and I am so thankful for that.

Ha, ha, ha.

One thing I’ve been doing a lot of lately is painting. I’ve painted a desk and then I decided to paint my file cabinet, so it would match.

Painted file cabinet and desk

The finished pair.

I’m very pleased with how they turned out! The desk was originally a natural wood color with some awesome natural-wood patterned contact paper on the top of it. The file cabinet was originally black. The file cabinet was interesting, as that was metal and I’ve never painted metal before. I had planned to use spray paint, but I had leftover paint from the desk so I used that. I replaced the drawer pulls and voila! Very bright furniture!

Grizzy is mewing for me, so I will keep this short. More kitty pictures coming soon!

Happy October!

You may or may not know that I love new months. Love, love, love them. I like the fresh start. New goals*, new plans, new month!

This month I’m especially excited because I love Halloween. I love the festive decorations. I love how the leaves change and the weather cools. I also wear a lot of black and have two black cats, so we fit right in! 🙂 And my kitties seem to gravitate toward all things pumpkin. Why, check out Miss Sophie. I had just gotten this fine ceramic jack-o’-lantern home from a thrift store expedition and voila! She had to park herself right next to it.

Miss Sophie approves.

Apologies for the crappy iPhone pic. I need to upgrade soon, as my phone is “corrects” words to absolute gibberish. I could say “I’ll be there soon” and it becomes “I’ll be tendta soon.” Bizarre.

I hope you all are enjoying a wonderful start to fall!

*I try to focus on one goal a month. This month it’s at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. Yep, every day! I’m shooting for consistency. Considering this beautiful, cool weather makes me want to nest (read: not exercise), I think this is a good goal.
