Thrifty Thursday – Unicorns and Rainbows

Sometimes you need a little bit of sunshine, rainbows, or unicorns in your life. I can tell you when I found these gems it was pretty sunny outside, and the unicorns have rainbows on them! Triple win!

I present…child.

They also made me laugh because they are kind of bizarre and creepy. But hey, whatever works for you. 🙂

I still haven’t figured out how to properly transfer the files from this WordPress account the the new URL, argh. I might give myself another month to monkey with it and if that doesn’t work, simply start fresh at the new URL in September. Fingers crossed I can move everything.

Argh Part 16543514364

Honestly, my life is not always a series of dark clouds and traumatic events, but lately it feels that way. I know this is simply a rough patch and it will get better but man. Can it please get a little better soon! Can’t I go back to Friday or whenever that was and feel like I have a handle on things again?

To completely switch gears, here is a picture of Grizzy:

Getting comfy on the comforter pile.

I got up really early yesterday and was productive because in times of strife, feeling like I did something as mundane as cleaning my kitchen is a win. So I got up, made a list of to-dos, cleaned my house, and did laundry, which meant I stripped the beds. G promptly climbed up the bedding mountain and settled in for a nap. It cracks me up how they will spot something “new” (in this case, the blankets wadded up) and stake their claim.

Oh, to be a carefree kitty like G.

I almost forgot! We have a new outside visitor and he’s a slightly more padded version of G! All black and a little bulkier compared to the slim G. We all saw him/her last night. This means I’ll have to stop at the store for extra cat food…

Sophie = Gumby?

A closer view.

When I first saw Sophie’s leg crooked like this I was worried. It looked so strange! I didn’t want her to be paralyzed. Thankfully she wasn’t. ::paranoid cat mom::

(Also, I realize there are a bunch of seeds on the carpet there. I do vacuum, really. Sometimes when I put seeds out for the birds I spill, and sometimes I document it, hahah.)

Happy Friday, all! It’s been a week, hasn’t it? I feel like I’m always saying that lately! Here is the good news: while this hasn’t been the smoothest past couple months of life, I feel like things are turning a corner.

It’s like when you’re running a race. Now, if you signed up for the race, generally you like to run or you like the feeling you get when you’re done. You’re doing it of your own free will. With any race, there are good points and bad points. (Let’s face it: no one likes hills.) There is good and bad and you’re handling both in stride (no pun intended), but then you see that mile marker and you realize you’ve reached another milestone and you feel so good like, “Yes, I can do this!”

yes wrestler

That’s more or less how I feel now. I’m certainly not ready to throw my hands up and say, “I’m done. No more race for me.” What has helped is picking out mile markers and using those as my goals; seeing them pop up every once in a while is such a great feeling. I saw some this week so YAY!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Thrifty Thursday – Christmas in July

Christmas in July globe

Christmas in July!

I couldn’t help it. 🙂

Here is another interesting find:

Orange turnip lime pattern dress

Talk about a loud print…

I thought this was hands-down one of the ugliest things I’ve ever seen. However, I’m sure someone wore it and loved it. I love thinking about that: Who wore it? What drew them to this dress? Did they like the loud print and colors? Are their retinas intact?

Union made dress...not something you see every day.

Union made…not something you see every day.

I like checking labels, too. A union-made label is not something you see very often these days. It must have been a huge sense of pride back in the day. Oh, how things change. Think about everything that’s happened since you were born; on one hand, it probably doesn’t seem like much, but on the other hand, if you dig a little deeper, so much has changed. So often, what’s changed disappears–it gets eaten up by time’s passing. That’s one of the many reasons I like thrifting: you can get a peek into times past and have a chance to “re-live” or envision it before it heads off into obscurity (or the landfill). And sometimes, you can even save it from both!

Terrific Tuesday – The Roundup

I had a big post written out yesterday but I deleted by accident and blergh. So it goes.

As you may have noticed, while life is good here, I’m also feeling a little blah. Not blue, just blah. Do you ever have times like that? Maybe it’s because summer seems to be the season of unschedules and I’m not used to that? Plus, I’m missing times when I had what seemed like endless energy. But I’m working on getting it back.

That said, here are some things for Terrific Tuesday!

  • Lately when I come home I’ll see these two small fries on my bed. Usually they’re by my pillows, but this time they were on the opposite end. My heart melted when I saw how they were snuggled so close.
  • Sophie and G snuggled up

    Sophie and G smushing

    Kitty smush.

  • Last night I went for a walk. It always seems to clear my head and invigorate me. There was a chance of thunderstorms, so I thought I’d get home before it started pouring. No such luck, but it was great walking in the pouring rain! There was wind, too, and while it wasn’t cold, every time the wind blew I’d lose my breath. It reminded me of when you are on a rollercoaster and you plunge down and your breath is taken away.

I was sopping wet when I made it to my front door and lo and behold, one of my neighbors buzzed me in! Saved me the trouble of wrangling my keys in the rain. So yay for nice neighbors!

  • Last week I had my first meeting as Toastmasters president. The meeting ran smoothly, everyone seemed to enjoy it, and I felt great! It was cool to feel such a positive, energetic vibe. I’m working with some great officers, so I think this will be a very productive, fun year.

One of my goals is to have fellowship there. I’ve made so many great friends through the group, and there are so many interesting people there. It’s a good place for fellowship. And what brings people together like food? 🙂

I promised that if elected, I would bring food to every meeting and I didn’t go back on my promise. Last week I brought an assortment of cookies with chocolate on them. Well, it was hot last week and they were in my car so they were a little melty when I brought them to the meeting. Still, people ate them! It made me feel really good to see people back at the cookie table, chocolate all over their fingers, chatting with one another. Toastmasters is such a wonderful group; I’m very proud to be a part of it.

  • What is terrific in your world this Tuesday?

Two years since I met Grizzy

    Grizzy on his cat ledge

It’s been two years since I first met this handsome guy.

Today is a big day. Two years ago today, I went to MADACC over my lunch hour. I saw two handsome kitties pawing at their cube windows and I decided to meet them. After I met the first guy, a black kitty with amber eyes, I thought “How can I choose? He’s really great…”. I started to stress and I literally sent up a prayer asking God to give me a sign.

The adoption assistant put Mr. Amber Eyes back and got Grizzy for me. G and I went into a room and he explored everything. I pet him a bit and brushed off what seemed to be endless amounts of fur. He, too, was pretty great so I worried a bit about who I would choose; I knew both would be super companions, but I also knew I was only ready for one at that point.

Suddenly G jumped into my lap and curled himself into a bun. He was there for a few seconds–it was like he was testing out my lap. Satisfied, he jumped off and continued to explore the room. I knew then I had my sign; Grizzy was coming home with me. I’d have to wait until the next day to make it official, but I started the paperwork and set up a time to pick him up.

It’s been two years since I first saw my little G-man. I can’t believe the time has gone by so quickly! So many things have changed since then: bosses, jobs, friendships. Life is good now, but I will always remember that time as such a happy, peaceful, blessed period in my life. 🙂

    Thrifty Thursday – Boardwalk Empire

Okay, maybe it’s more like inspired by Boardwalk Empire, but still! I love it. I meant to blog about this several weeks ago, even before May 20th–that was the day I cropped it on my phone–but it got lost in the shuffle. I’m too lazy to trim off the Verizon ad, so please ignore that.

This is one of my favorite outfits ever because everything (aside from tights and undergarments) was thrifted!

    Sweater, necklace, dress, all thrifted!

    Sweater, necklace, dress, all thrifted!

    knee-length dress

A better look at the length. It hits just below my knees.

I really did have a picture of my shoes and tights, but I can’t find that picture. Because I love you guys, I tried to recreate it in my own bathroom, sans tights:

    1920s shoes v1

    The view I have.

    1920s shoes

    Tres cute, no?

The shoes are Aerosoles and super comfy. I almost didn’t buy them because I wasn’t sure if they were cute. Did I mention they were like-new and only $6? (Sometimes I think I check my brains at the door when I enter a thrift store. I’m telling you, those stores are intoxicating, har, har.)

The dress was probably $6, the necklace was only $5 and found at a flea market, and the sweater was $6-7 simply because it’s Banana Republic. (Goodwill marks up premium brands regardless of their quality.) That’s not a bad price for an entire outfit!

    Some notes:

    • How do you like my RBF? HA! I recently found out about that term and it makes me laugh because it’s so flipping ridiculous. Can you imagine a man ever coming up with that? Maybe theirs would be “resting bro face.”
    • I also think “Dang, I look relatively young!” Not that I’m super old, but as I mentioned the other day, I’ve been very aware of time passing lately. I think learning about a former friend dying really got me on that track. Anyhow, I’m not ruing the fact that I’m not longer 20, but it’s definitely interesting to see the changes. Like the inescapable grey hairs. 🙂
    • Recently I heard a catchy song on the radio with lyrics that sounds like “I can’t feel my face when I’m with you.” The almighty Google confirmed that yep, that’s what they’re singing about, and some astute commenter said, “The song is about drugs.” I have to laugh because what are the other options? Singing about being the freezing cold where the wind numbs your face?I do like the song, it’s pretty catchy, but I have to admit I feel a little silly belting out how “I can’t feel my face” when I am driving around.

    Word-full Wednesday

cats birds and rabbits oh my

    Typical weekend morning.

This is a pretty typical weekend for us. I putter around the house while the cats watch the animals on the patio. It’s actually really nice; I’ve been trying to slow down (hahaha) and appreciate little things like that more. Lately when I walk I’ve been noticing wildflowers and the like and I’ve caught myself thinking “Where were the last year?” Obviously they were there, I simply didn’t notice. I’m glad I’m noticing now.

This reminds me of a question I was asked yesterday*: When are you happiest? I was honest and explained that I’ve been trying to practice gratitude all day long. I wake up and I list off three things that I’m thankful for, I go to bed and list off three things for which I’m thankful. I could almost see the person who asked rolling his eyes, but it’s true. Frankly, I’m not sure what kind of answer he was expecting: “Ah, 5 o’clock on Friday when I’m home drinking a beer?” Seriously! I suppose I could say when I’m with my cats, when I’m refinishing furniture, when I am puttering around a thrift store with a friend…but something tells me he wouldn’t have gone for that, either. Don’t you love it when people ask questions not to learn about you but rather to show how smart and/or cool they are?

The past few months I’ve been very aware of how fragile life is and how quickly things can change for both the better and the worse. I imagine that’s why I’m trying to make a consistent effort to appreciate what I have, to practice gratitude, and to choose happiness, as tough as that may be at times!

Now watch, I’ll be super crabby in a few hours, hahaha. 🙂

*Thank you for your good thoughts yesterday for my little meeting! I’m very happy with how things went on my end. I don’t think it would be the right opportunity for various reasons, but I’m very pleased with how I presented myself and I’m glad I had the chance to check it out.
